A Changeable Sea is the second photography book I've designed in collaboration with fine art photographer David Rathbone, following Big Water, our earlier book documenting Virginia's Eastern Shore.
David and I have developed an excellent working relationship, collaborating closely on the design, sequencing, and production of his books. For A Changeable Sea, our approach was simple and understated, giving the photographs room to breathe and allowing the changing light, weather, and landscapes to tell their own story.
The book brings together 54 beautiful black-and-white photographs taken along the coasts of Maine, Nova Scotia, Iceland, Ireland, and Scotland. Despite their geographic distances, the images share a common sensibility, capturing the character of places shaped by the North Atlantic.
The finished book is an 84-page, 9 × 11.25-inch hardcover, featuring duotone reproductions and an essay by Christian Beamish, The Sea is Full of Places. Published in a limited edition of 100 copies, it's a wonderful example of what can emerge from a close collaboration between photographer and designer.
I've worked with independent photographers and artists on projects ranging from small editions to substantial illustrated books, helping them translate their work into thoughtfully designed publications.
